When the Tour de France 2024 gets underway June 29 in Florence, Italy, three Canadian riders will be at the starting line ready to pursue the stage wins and colorful jerseys.

Guillaume Boivin, Derek Gee and Hugo Houle – all riding for the Israel-Premier Tech team – will be the ones representing the Great White North, while well-known Canuck Michael Woods, a stage winner at the event in 2023, sits out the 2024 race.

Boivin, 35, is a longtime member of the Premier Tech squad and has ridden in a support role to help set up his teammates for success on the biggest stages in the sport, but he also has seen the spotlight as a three-time Canadian road champion and past Olympian.

Houle, 33, has one major professional win to his name, and it was a big one – Stage 16 of the 2022 Tour de France, which made him the first Canadian individual since 1988, and third Canadian overall, to reach the top of the podium at the Tour de France.

Steve Bauer broke through for Canada in France by winning the first stage of the 1988 event, while Ryder Hesjedal was part of the Team Garmin – Cervelo squad that won the team time trial on Stage 2 in 2011.

Houle, who will be racing in his sixth consecutive Tour de France, went on to finish a career-best of 23rd overall in 2022 and followed that performance with a 38th-place finish in 2023.

Though Houle’s best stage finish last year was 13th (Stage 15), he played an important role in helping Woods take Stage 9 of the prestigious race.

Michael Woods Not Competing In Tour de France 2024

With Woods skipping the 2024 Tour de France, the 26-year-old Gee will bring some youth to the squad, though the second-year professional is anything but inexperienced.

After four second-place stage finishes in his debut at the Giro d’Italia in 2023, Gee has had a strong 2024, which has included a stage win at the 2024 Critérium du Dauphiné, where he finished third overall behind Primoz Roglic and Matteo Jorgenson.

Gee, a two-time Canadian national champion in the individual time trial, will look to find similar success in his debut at the Tour de France. His early success as a professional already has him inked to the Israel-Premier Tech team through 2028.

In all, the 111th edition of the Tour de France this year will include up to 176 riders (representing 22 teams of eight) with their sights set on the yellow jersey, which has gone to Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard two consecutive times (2022 and 2023). The prior two races were won by Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar (2020, 2021).
