Biniam Girmay of Eritrea won the prestigious Gent Wevelgem classic on Sunday, becoming the first sub-Saharan cyclist to win a one-day classic.

Denmark's former world champion Mads Pedersen of Trek-Segafredo won an ultra-competitive Gent-Wevelgem on Sunday after outsprinting an elite escape group.

Reigning champion Alexander Kristoff heads a very strong line-up of sprinters and Classics specialists at the 2020 Gent-Wevelgem. The 82nd running of the Belgian race will feature cobbles, hills, and unpaved roads on October 11, 2020. For the first time since its inaugural edition in 1934, the Gent-Wevelgem will be taking place in the autumn rather than the spring. On May 5th, 2020 the UCI released its revised 2020 road cycling calendar, including all of the Monuments and Grand Tours, plus other big World Tour races such as Strade Bianche and the Criterium du Dauphine.

The first classic of the 2020 season gave viewers everything that they could want from a springtime race in Belgium. 

The classics specialists will be anxious to test their legs in what is expected to be a rainy opening weekend of the season at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad this Saturday. The same 200 kilometer course from 2019 awaits the riders with 13 cobbled "bergs" including the iconic Kapelmuur.

The Classics Season is upon us, opening with the celebration of the 75th edition of Omloop Het Niewsblad. The who’s who of Classics racers will all be at the start line, itching to get their season underway. With 200 kilometers on tap, 13 climbs and 9 cobbled sectors before the finish in Ninove, the men's course remains unchanged from 2019.  

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is the kickoff weekend for the spring classics, specifically the cobbled classics. At 200 kilometers long, Omloop is not as big a day in the saddle for the men as the Tour of Flanders, but Omloop asserts itself on the calendar in ways other than distance.

Belgian Champion Yves Lampaert begins the "serious" part of his season starting with the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad on February 29. The race kicks off a string of one-day Cobbled Classics, ending with Paris-Roubaix in April.
