The 2018 edition of the Tour de Suisse will see a field full of some of the fastest finishers in the sport, looking to take a confidence boosting win in advance of the Tour de France.

But the mountainous route won’t favor the pure sprinters. The hilly stages could favor classics riders such as Greg van Avermaet and Tim Wellens—or sprinters who can climb, such as Peter Sagan and Michael Matthews.

This dynamic will benefit cycling fans, who will see some of the world’s best classics riders trying to animate the race and shed the pure sprinters on stages 2, 3, and 8.

Peter Sagan

The world champion will surely be looking to get a taste of victory after coming off of a rather disappointing Amgen Tour of California—which saw him finish without a single stage win for the first time in his career. If history is any indicator, then Sagan’s chances of winning a stage in Switzerland are looking good, already having a remarkable 15 to his name at this race.

The Tour de Suisse will be a key test for Sagan before the Tour de France, where he will be in search of his sixth green points jersey.

Fernando Gaviria

The young Colombian sprinting sensation comes into Suisse with flying form, having racked up 3 stage wins and the points classification at the recent Amgen Tour of California. That brings his total win count up to 7 already for the year. He will no doubt be looking to add to that number in Switzerland.

André Greipel

The experienced German has his sights set on this year’s Tour de France, and yet another opportunity to battle Sagan for the points competition. But first he’ll be looking to prove himself in the Swiss countryside. Having only competed once in this race back in 2011, Greipel has yet to win a stage here. This year’s relatively flat stage 8 looks to be his best shot.

Alexander Kristoff

The Norwegian powerhouse has already won a couple of stages at the Tour de Suisse, and also has 3 wins in the bag this year so far. But much like Sagan, he is coming away from California without any wins, and is surely hungry for the top step at Suisse.

Michael Matthews

The Australian on Team Sunweb had a less-than-stellar classics campaign in the spring and has yet to win a sprint this year. While not a pure sprinter like some of the other riders on this list, Matthews can survive the climbs better than most. That may come in handy on more than one occasion as he hunts for stage wins at the race.

Arnaud Démare

With fewer days of racing in his legs this year than many of the other sprinters, the Frenchman will be looking to tune up his engine before heading to the big show a few weeks later. Démare has an intimidating kick to the line, and will surely be looking to impose his power on the other sprinters at the race while adding another stage win to his list.
