Fireworks At CC Leuven
The absence of Van der Poel and Van Aert at Leuven will give Telenet-Fidea Lions racers Toon Aerts and Corne van Kessel a chance to win.
The Soudal Classics continue with the series’ penultimate race, Leuven.
Grip’n Rip
Typically a fast, trail-like course, Leuven forces racers to pump their way through wavy technical sections and speed along paved straight aways. On a dry course, riders will be able to carry their speed through most areas, allowing them to stay clipped in a good portion of the race.
Racers with solid diesel engines — but minimal handling skills — will have a hard time staying with the lead groups that promise to form.
Slop On Tap?
While last year’s course saw dry conditions, we’re heading into a weekend after some harder rain, with chances of showers throughout the next several days. What does that mean for the course? It will make the snaked sections in the woods a gamble for everyone, favoring those with savvy technical abilities, and forcing those without to regain time on the paved straights.
What would be a trail-blasting fast attack when dry could become a sloppy mud-fest like Bredene or GP Sven Nys.
Elle Emerging
Ellen van Loy has historically had great showings at Leuven - along with Brit Nikki Brammeier — will be the top threats for podium finishes.
But look for American Elle Anderson, too. She’s aiming to notch another result following her impressive sixth-place finish at Superprestige Diegem.
Can she get that elusive European podium?
After a hard fall at GP Sven Nys from this week, Van Aert is likely resting his sore shoulder. Van der Poel’s earned a much-needed break after dominating the Belgian Christmas series.
The absence of Van der Poel and Van Aert on the start line will give Telenet-Fidea Lions racers Toon Aerts and Corne van Kessel a chance to vie for the top step.
Also, watch for Corendon-Circus racers Tom Meeusen and David van der Poel (Mathieu’s older brother) to compete for podium positions.
