The Season Begins: Tour Down Under Preview

The 2025 cycling season begins with a bang as the Tour Down Under celebrates its 25th anniversary from January 21 to 26. With six thrilling stages under sunny skies, this iconic race is the perfect way to kick off an action-packed year of cycling.

Defending champion Stevie Williams returns to defend his ochre jersey but faces stiff competition from big names like Geraint Thomas, Jay Vine, Dylan van Baarle, and Jai Hindley. Rising stars, including 19-year-old Spanish sensation Pablo Torres, add even more excitement to the mix.

Key Stages to Watch

This year’s course is packed with drama. Stage 3 finishes in Uraidla after tackling the Pound Reserve climb, featuring a punishing 7.7% gradient that will test even the strongest riders. Late attacks are almost inevitable in the final twists and turns, promising an electrifying finish.

Stage 4 takes the intensity up a notch with Nettle Hill. Though only 1.8 kilometers, its steep 8.4% gradient will invite daring attacks. Expect aggressive racing from the puncheurs.

The queen stage, Stage 5, centers on the legendary Willunga Hill. Short but brutal, this 3.3-kilometer climb with a 7% average gradient is where climbers battle for glory. Fans will pack the roadside to cheer on thrilling attacks and tactical brilliance in the fight for the GC lead.

The final day in Adelaide features a high-speed criterium on Stage 6, providing sprinters one last chance to shine and grab glory in the closing kilometers.

Women’s Tour Down Under

Running from January 17 to 19, the women’s Tour Down Under features three explosive stages. Olympic silver medalist Ally Wollaston teams up with Demi Vollering to form a formidable duo, while sprinter Alison Jackson and all-rounder Chloé Dygert bring star power. Local favorites Amanda Spratt and Ruby Roseman-Gannon will aim to keep the ochre jersey in Australian hands.

What’s Ahead in 2025?

The 2025 Tour Down Under sets the stage for an epic year of cycling. Will Jay Vine reclaim his crown? Can Jai Hindley shine in the GC? Or will a young rider like Pablo Torres steal the show? The answers lie on the roads of South Australia.
