Pogacar Shoots At Triple Crown: Worlds 2024

Here are a few reasons why cycling fans need to tune into FloBikes to watch the 2024 UCI Road World Championships, starting Saturday, Sept. 21.

The 2024 World Championships in Zurich this September is shaping up to be one of the hardest in years due to the elevation and intense competition from some of the most skilled elite riders in the world.

Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar, Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel, and Primoz Roglic are just a few of the names you'll see in this year's event. We spoke with FloBikes editor Gregor Brown to discuss why this year's Worlds are a can't-miss event for cycling fans everywhere.

Will We See The Third Ever Triple Crown Earned This Year?

On the men's side, Tadej Pogacar stands out after his wins at the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France earlier this year. "The men's road race is pretty exciting this year because Tadej Pogacar is a hot favorite who just won the GP Montreal," said Brown.

To add to the accolades if he can capture the title, Pogacar would also be the first Slovenian to win the World Championships.

Mathieu van der Poel, last year's champion, is one rider that will be trying to stick out even more—although even he has admitted that he does not expect as much success due to the climbing nature of this Swiss course.

If Pogacar wins the Triple Crown, he joins riders Eddy Merckx and Stephen Roche in the Triple Crown club, becoming its first new member since 1987.

Who Will Earn The Coveted Rainbow Jersey?

After the recent Olympics events, the 2024 UCI Road World Championships will give worldwide fans another to cheer on their favorite countries and rather than the racing in the usual trade teams like Visma or Movistar. Championship winners from this event will earn a white jersey with the iconic colored bands around the chest indicating that they are the World Champion for the following year.

Former champions are allowed to wear the colored bands on their collar and cuffs for the remainder of their career.

Slovenia's team includes Pogacar and Roglic, winners from the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, and Vuelta a España. If they can work together well, they will have a great chance in Zurich.

Another team, Belgium, will be led by Remco Evenepoel without teammate Wout van Aert after his crash in the Vuelta a España.

On the women's side of the Belgian team, Lotte Kopecky has a great chance of repeating her 2023 win. Olympic gold medalist Kristen Faulkner will also be looking to have a successful weekend in Switzerland for Team USA.

What's Special About This Year's Course In Switzerland?

With this year's Worlds happening in and around Zurich, Switzerland, the staggering 4,470 meters of climbing will be a challenge for even the most elite riders. "It's a climber's course, it should be really good there on the lakeshore of Lake Zurich in Switzerland," explained Brown.

There are two notable climbs: The first is 1.1km long with an average gradient of 8%, topping out at 15%. The second climb, after a brief descent, is slightly longer at 2.3km with an average gradient of 5.7%. Both climbs will provide opportunities for attacks and for the stars to lay down the law.
