Tour de France 2024 Stage 13 Preview

Stage 13 of the Tour de France 2024 might be the last clear opportunity for the sprinters to take a victory this year, and many eyes likely will be on red-hot Biniam Girmay, who already has claimed three wins through a dozen stages.

Girmay became the first Black African to win a stage on the Tour de France when he won Stage 3. He added victories in Stage 8 and Stage 12 and now will have a 165.3-kilometer ride from Agen to Pau on Friday to see if he can snag a fourth win.

Girmay also leads the green jersey Points Classification with 328 points, while Jasper Philipsen, who won Stage 10, is second with 221.

Two-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar remains the leader of the General Classification, and it looks like this year's edition of the TDF may be turning into a three-rider race.

Pogacar leads first-time participant Remco Evenepoel by 1 minute, 6 seconds, and two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard is another eight seconds back. Joao Almeida fourth, but he's a distant 3 minutes, 6 seconds behind Vingegaard.

FloBikes coverage of Stage 13 will begin Friday at 7:20 a.m. Eastern and is expected to conclude around noon EDT.

Stage 13 Tour de France 2024

Stage 13 of the Tour de France 2024 will take the riders on another trek that gets the attention of the sprinters with its flat spots, while it torments them with more climbing.

Though it's only 165.3 kilometers, compared to more than 200 kilometers in Stage 11 and Stage 12, the ride from Agen to Pau on Friday probably won't be short on drama or excitement.

If the sprinters can power through the hills along the way, including two Category 4 climbs, there's a chance to see one take Stage 13 - possibly Biniam Girmay or Mark Cavendish adding to the history they've already made at the 2024 event.

At the same time, if the sprinters are slowed by the terrain and breakaways happen, there's a chance a rider - or group(s) of riders can put the stage out of reach for the sprint specialists.

Once the riders arrive in Pau, the surroundings will be familiar, as the city has been visited the third-most times in Tour de France history with 75, but they'll still have to navigate the twists and turns - even a roundabout - the landscape has to offer.

Again, the question is, will it be the sprinters bunching up in the final meters to settle Stage 13, or will it be an aggressive go-getter cruising across the line first?

Of all the TDF stages that have rolled through Pau, the city has welcomed the race and seen it off more than 60 times each.

In 2023, Stage 5 departed Pau and took the riders on a 163-kilometer ride to Laruns. The stage was won by Australia's Jai Hindley, who also claimed the yellow jersey. Eventual champion Jonas Vingegaard took it the next day and cruised with it to his second consecutive TDF title.

It was 2019 when the race last finished a stage in Pau, with local favorite Julian Alaphilippe taking the stage (Stage 13), which was a 27.2-kilometer individual time trial.

The last traditional stage to finish in Pau was Stage 18 in 2018, a 171-kilometer journey from Trie-sur-Baise won by Arnaud Demare, also from France.

The last time the TDF passed through Agen was more than two decades ago (a Stage 9 start in 2000). The 181-kilometer stage was won by Italy's Paolo Bettini.

Again Friday, bonus seconds will be offered to the first three riders across the line - 10, 6 and 4 seconds, respectively.
