Tour de France 2024 Stage 12 Preview: Are Leaders Pulling Away?

Tour de France 2024 Stage 12 Preview

Stage 12 at the Tour de France 2024 will include something for everyone, as the 203.6-kilometer route will feature a handful of climbing opportunities and an intermediate sprint.

The question that will need to be answered once the action begins to unfold Thursday is whether the winner will come from a breakaway, or if the sprinters will have a chance to race for another stage win.

Stage 11 saw the riders fly through their 211-kilometer journey, with Jonas Vingegaard ultimately showing he's back in business after a serious crash earlier in the year.

Vingegaard responded after a Tadej Pogacar attack Wednesday and beat the yellow jersey to the line in a sprint between the titans.

Through 11 stages, Pogacar leads the General Classification by 1 minute, 6 seconds over first-timer Remco Evenepoel, while Vingegaard, the two-time defending champion at the TDF, sits in third place at 1 minutes, 14 seconds.

Primoz Roglic is hanging close, only a minute behind Vingegaard, but fifth-place Joao Almeida is another two minutes behind Roglic.

FloBikes coverage of Stage 12 will begin Thursday at 6:25 a.m. Eastern and is expected to conclude around noon EDT.

Stage 12 Tour de France 2024

Stage 12 of the Tour de France 2024 will take the riders on a hilly ride from Aurillac to Villeneuve-Sur-Lot that will be a a slight break from the intense climbs and gradients faced in Stage 11, though not by too much. There is a bit of a downhill start to the stage, however.

If Stage 12 looks familiar, it's because the riders saw the terrain during the 2022 Tour de France, but going in the opposite direction for a 5.9-gradient climb to the historic Rocamadour.

The 203.6-kilometer journey in Stage 12 should offer the opportunity for aggressive riders to break away from the group, and while the sprinters will have a chance to close any gaps, similar efforts on previous visits to the area have not panned out.

Could 2024 be different? Will it be a breakaway victory or another exciting bunch sprint after some suffering for the sprinters along the way, and especially in Stage 11?

This stage offers three categorized climbs and one intermediate sprint to challenge the 168 riders who remain in the race.

Aurillac has been part of the TDF on 14 previous occasions, but not since 2011, when Andre Greipel of Germany won the flat Stage 10 that ended with a bunch sprint. It was the first of 11 individual stages he won at the Tour de France from 2011-2016.

It has been nearly a quarter of a century since a stage of the race has concluded in Villeneuve-Sur-Lot, with Erik Dekker of the Netherlands taking the Stage 8 victory in 2000. It was one of three stage wins for him that year (he finished his career with four), along with being named the most combative rider.

The first three riders to finish Stage 12 this year will earn bonus seconds - 10, 6 and 4, respectively.
