Van der Poel is the grandson of the great French cyclist Raymond "Pou-Pou" Poulidor, a rider most notable for finishing second overall in the Tour de France on three separate occasions, while never once managing to wear the yellow jersey.

After an unsuccessful opening stage of the Tour de France, Van der Poel saw stage two as his final opportunity to honor his recently departed grandfather by putting on the yellow jersey.
