Patrick Lefevere's 'Former World Champion Rehabilitation Program' Graduates Philippe Gilbert, Fixes Mark Cavendish, Eyes Peter Sagan
Mark Cavendish signed with Deceuninck - Quick Step amidst a three-year drought in victories. Many suspected the former world champion and sprinting legend's career was over, but team boss Patrick Lefevere had faith.
Lefevere made a similar signing in 2017 with Philippe Gilbert, who looked like his best days were behind him. Perhaps partly incentivized by a win-bonus pay structure, Gilbert went on to win both Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders in the Quick Step blue.
Lefevere seems to be once again working his magic with a former world champion that many had pegged as washed up. Just a couple months into his return to Lefevere's program, Mark Cavendish has won three consecutive stages in the Tour of Turkey, thoroughly putting an end to his losing streak.
Patrick Lefevere's "former world champion rehabilitation program" is clearly working some magic, and rumors are that Peter Sagan may be eyeing a spot in 2022.
