Team Sky Win The Hammer Series
We couldn't have asked for a more thrilling finish to the first edition of the Hammer Series. Team Sky began the stage with a 31 second lead on Team Sunweb. Sunweb steadily closed them down and finally made the pass on the third lap with less than 5km to go. The Sky sports director got on the radio telling the team to relax and save their energy for the final corner.
Right on cue, Danny Van Poppel put in a huge turn for the Sky squad to launch them ahead of Sunweb. They came into the finish straight and it was clear that Sky's three sprinters wouldn't have an issue distancing the Sunweb riders. The big question was whether their climber Tao Geoghegan Hart could manage a sprint. After his unfortunate crash on the first stage of the series, Geoghegan Hart redeemed himself. The British rider had just enough left in his legs to hold off the three Sunweb riders fighting to pass him in the final 200m.
Team Sky now enter the record books as the first ever winners of the Hammer Series.
