While warming-up for the Tabor UCI Cyclocross World Cup European Cyclocross champion Lucinda Brand crashed, fracturing her hand.
Brand’s Baloise Trek Lions team reported that she fractured a metacarpal in her right hand and will be out “for an unknown time.”
According to a report in Sporza, Brand crashed while practicing a new line on the Tabor circuit the day before the Czech World Cup.
Brand reportedly hit her hand on a post. Brand had a successful surgery on Monday in Belgium and posted a message to instagram after the operation.
‘Hi everyone, I want to thank you for all your kind messages. I just had my surgery and everything went well. I’m ready for the recovery and to come back as soon as possible of course. See you soon.”
It is unclear when Brand will make her return to competition, though on Sunday she suggested that defending her continental title would be unlikely.
Prior to Tabor, Brand was second overall in the UCI World Cup. Her absence from Tabor and presumed absence from Maasmechelen has sent her tumbling down the standings, giving Fem van Empel a large buffer in the early season rankings.
The European continental championships take place on November 5th in Namur. The UCI Cyclocross World Cup will resume the following weekend in Beekse Bergen.
