Mitchelton-Scott management have decided to leave sprinter Caleb Ewan off the team's 2018 Tour de France roster.

The 23-year-old Australian placed second at Milan San Remo this year behind Vincenzo Nibali, and won a stage of the Santos Tour Down Under.

Ewan, who has been linked to contract negotiations with Lotto-Soudal for 2019, expressed his disappointment via Twitter.

Ewan wrote, "Devastated is an understatement of how I feel about @Mitchelton-SCOTT's decision to leave me at home this July. I was on track to being more than ready for my TDF debut. So much hard work has gone into this from my sprint team and I to be ready for our big goal this year."

Mitchelton-Scott's director Matt White told CyclingNews the decision was performance based, and that Ewan's two victories so far this season were not enough to garner him a spot on the Tour de France roster.

The team has built its 2018 squad around general classification rider Adam Yates, with a line-up focused on the stage 3 team time trial and the cobblestone route to Roubaix on stage 9.

In 2016, Yates finished fourth at the Tour de France and won the white jersey of the best young rider.
