In the final 20km on Stage 2, a break of four riders had established a gap of around 30 seconds. It was building up to be a hotly contested finale with the group working well together and doing a good job of holding off the peloton fighting to bring them in behind. Right at the 5km to go marker, the break rounded a corner to cross a bridge when they saw the barrier down due to a boat passing by underneath.
Forced to stop, the escape group of Leah Kirchmann (Team Sunweb), Rossella Ratto (Cylance Pro Cycling), Mieke Kroger (Canyon SRAM Racing), and Katarzyna Pawlowska (Boels-Dolmans) watched the rest of the riders join them on the bridge. The UCI Women's World Tour Twitter account posted that the break would be allowed to start 20 seconds ahead of the peloton when the race resumed, but no time gap was given. The tweet below was deleted.
It was a truly bizarre moment. Over the broadcast, the race organizers stated that since the gap was under 30 seconds, the break would not be given its lead. For the second day in a row, the stage win would come down to a sprint. Marianne Vos (WM3 Pro Cycling) earned another runner-up finish, this time narrowly beaten by Chloe Hosking (Ale Cipollini).
