After the break escaped to win the first stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné, the peloton clearly wasn't going to allow that to happen again. The breakaway was never given much of an advantage, and the race came together inside the final 10km. The race would be decided between the sprint men on the slightly uphill finish to the second stage.
