Giro d'Italia winner Tom Dumoulin is coming off a long three weeks of racing, but that didn't stop him from competing at the inaugural Hammer Series. In the interview above, he talks about how tough the Hammer Climb stage was on Friday in Limburg, Netherlands. Dumoulin's efforts were a huge boost for Team Sunweb, which sits second overall after the series' opening day.
The race split early so being in the first group of leaders up the road was crucial. Dumoulin battled back and forth all day with Tao Geoghegan Hart (Team Sky) and Luke Durbridge (Orica-Scott).
Ultimately, the overall team scoring would be decided on the final lap with the double points at stake. Dumoulin out-sprinted Durbridge and Geoghegan Hart to finish second on lap 11 and give Team Sunweb (98.9 points) a bit of a cushion on Orica-Scott (84.7 points) and Team Sky (83.3) going into the Hammer Sprint on Saturday. Movistar leads the competition with 144.8 points.
Dumoulin, meanwhile, will now take some well-deserved time off.
