Tejay Van Garderen Redeems Himself With Stage 18 Giro d'Italia Win
Tejay van Garderen had a difficult start to the 2017 Giro d'Italia. He struggled on the early climbs and didn't perform as well as expected in the time trial, eliminating his GC hopes in the first two weeks of the tour. While he's endured a lot of questions about his fitness, he appears to have found his form in the third week of the Giro after winning Stage 18 on Thursday.
Van Garderen began riding more aggressively over the last couple stages. The BMC rider has gone on the attack in an effort to earn some type of positive result at the Giro. After a number of failed attempts, he was able to get into the main breakaway on Stage 18. It was a strong group that contained some big-name riders, including Philip Deignan (Team Sky), Davide Villella (Cannondale-Drapac), Omar Fraile (Dimension Data), Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo), Dario Cataldo (Astana Pro Team), Jan Hirt (CCC Sprandi Polkowice), and Winner Anacona (Movistar).

Heading into the final climb of the day, van Garderen was clearly motivated for the stage win. As he began to put more pressure on the remaining riders in the break, Landa was the only one who could keep the pace. The duo quickly rode off the front, and any other challenge for the stage would have to come from the pink jersey group. With the gap under a minute, a significant attack out of the GC contenders could quickly eat into the stage leaders' time gap.
Luckily for van Garderen and Landa, the chasers were focused more on their own games than bringing in the leading pair. Ilnur Zakarin, Vincenzo Nibali, Nairo Quintana, and Tom Dumoulin all made brief but unsuccessful moves. Strategic riding from the favorites played into the hands of the break. Finally, Thibaut Pinot and Domenico Pozzovivo managed to create some separation. Dumoulin was left to do all of the chasing on his own, attempting without success to get Nibali or Quintana to ride at the front.

Seeing the opportunity, the group splintered with riders all attempting to earn back time on the podium. With the GC riders now fully engaged in distancing Dumoulin, Nibali, and Quintana, the gap was quickly closing to van Garderen and Landa. Thibaut and Pozzovivo were riding to within 10 seconds of the lead duo, but ultimately the gap would hold.
Stage 18 came down to a sprint between two riders who both had potential for high GC placement at the start of the 2017 Giro. Both saw those hopes fall apart, and now they both have been fighting to find success. Landa led into the final, but van Garderen surged past to outsprint the Spanish rider and win his first-ever grand tour stage.
