A day after his stunning time trial performance gave him the overall race lead, George Bennett crossed the finish line safely within the pack on the seventh and final stage of the Amgen Tour of California on Saturday and celebrated the first WorldTour event win of his career.
Following an impressive ride on the Stage 5 finish up to Mt. Baldy in which the 27-year-old New Zealand rider finished third behind Andrew Talansky (Cannondale-Drapac) and Rafal Majka (Hansgrophe), Bennett took control of the race during the Stage 6 time trial. His fourth-place overall finish in the time trial gave him a 35-second advantage over Majka and 36 seconds on Talansky in the general classification going into the final stage.
On Stage 7, the race calmed down for the GC leaders, following some minor attacks on the last climb with Talansky testing the other contenders. The peloton was split over the climbs, which isolated a select group at the front from the main sprinters. Rally Cycling played its cards well by putting three men in the break. They worked well together on the descent into Pasadena. Evan Huffman outsprinted David Lopez Garcia (Sky) to become the only rider to claim multiple stage wins at this year's Tour of California. Peter Sagan won the bunch sprint behind over Matteo Trentin. Bennett finished with the chasers 22 seconds behind the break to comfortably win the 2017 edition of the Amgen Tour of California.
