Two days after grabbing the overall race lead, Nairo Quintana's time in the pink jersey proved to be short-lived after Tom Domoulin stormed to a Stage 10 time trial victory at the Giro d'Italia on Tuesday. Quintana finished 23rd in the time trial, losing time to most of the major GC contenders and 2:53 to Dumoulin, who now holds the maglia rosa.
With a rolling course and few technical sections, the 39.8km time trial was perfectly suited to the more powerful riders like Dumoulin and Vincenzo Nibali. There was no doubt that Quintana would lose time on the stage -- it was a matter of how far out his gap would extend. After an unfortunate crash on Stage 9, Thomas Geraint responded well to finish second overall in the time trial, 49 seconds behind Dumoulin's time of 50:37. The only other rider to finish within a minute of Dumoulin's winning performance was former pink jersey wearer Bob Jungles of Quick-Step Floors.

The result is a big red flag for Quintana's overall GC hopes at the Giro. On Stage 9, Dumoulin proved he is climbing better than any other point in his career. The final stage of the 2017 Giro will end with a 27.6km time trial. Monday's performances show that Quintana will need to have a significant buffer going into that stage if he wants to walk away from this race with the pink jersey.
Following the Stage 10 results, Dumoulin now wears the pink jersey. Quintana sits in second place with a 2:23 gap to close. Bauke Mollema (+2:38) moves up to third place, just two seconds ahead of Thibaut Pinot (+2:40). Nibali remains in fifth in the GC 2:47 behind Dumoulin.
There is still plenty of racing left with the race now approaching the halfway mark. Dumoulin appears to be in the best shape of his life, but climbing well on the 13.5km Blaukhaus climb during Stage 9 with an easy run-in is one thing... the four mountain stages in the final week of the tour will be his real test. Movistar shouldn't be worried yet. Quintana will pull back time in the final week, but Dumoulin is proving to be a bigger threat for the overall win than he was given credit for at the start of the race.
