Lorena Wiebes won the women's Milano-Sanremo on Saturday, triumphing in a bunch sprint to continue her strong start to the 2025 season.

The 26-year-old Dutch rider edged compatriot Marianne Vos and Switzerland's Noemi Ruegg at the line on the Italian Riviera, after a textbook lead-out from two-time world champion Lotte Kopecky.

"I knew how strong Lotte is and she put me in the perfect position," said Wiebes. "I need to say Vos surprised me a little bit. I didn't want to open my sprint too early, but it was enough for the win."

Local favorite Elisa Longo Borghini had launched a daring solo attack from the descent of the Poggio, gaining a gap in a thrilling finale after 160 kilometers of racing from Genoa.

But the 33-year-old was caught within the final few hundred meters before Wiebes surged past to claim the sprint finish.

Wiebes’ win marks her fourth victory of the season, following a win at the one-day race Le Samyn and three stage victories at the women's UAE Tour, where she also won the points classification. That four-day race was won by Longo Borghini.
