Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard won the Tour of the Algarve in a late flourish on Sunday after dominating the final day time trial.

On a sunny day in southern Portugal with a long 19.6km hilly route, Vingegaard won the Stage 5 time trial in 28 minutes and 25 seconds, showcasing his superior climbing ability.

The two-time Tour de France winner was making his seasonal debut in Portugal and eased into the race, seeming to struggle on the mountain stage. However, he took the overall lead on Sunday with a sizzling uphill performance in the final stage.

Vingegaard’s Late Surge To Victory

Vingegaard started the race conservatively, appearing off his usual pace in the mountains. However, he turned things around with a brilliant ride on the final day, taking both the stage win and the yellow jersey.

"Success depends heavily on having good legs, and I think I can say I had them today," said the 28-year-old. "This was also a bit of redemption for Stage 2, where I felt strong but didn’t get the result. It’s definitely a confidence boost for the rest of the season."

Key Support From Van Aert

His Visma-Lease a Bike teammate Wout van Aert finished second in the stage and will be a key ally in Vingegaard’s efforts to reclaim Tour de France supremacy from Tadej Pogačar, who won the UAE Tour earlier on Sunday.

João Almeida of UAE Team Emirates secured second place in the final general classification, finishing 15 seconds behind Vingegaard, while Laurens De Plus of Ineos Grenadiers took third, 24 seconds back. Primoz Roglic finished 53 seconds back in eighth.

Final General Classification – Tour of the Algarve

  • 🥇 Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) – 19h 43m 32s
  • 🥈 João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) – +15s
  • 🥉 Laurens De Plus (Ineos Grenadiers) – +24s

What’s Next For Vingegaard?

Vingegaard’s strong performance in Portugal signals that he is back on form as he builds toward bigger goals. His next major targets will likely include the Paris-Nice stage race and the Tour de France, where he will face off against Pogačar in another highly anticipated showdown.
