Frenchman Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) edged out Germany's Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) in a thrilling photo finish to win the fourth stage of the Tour Down Under on Friday. Ecuador's Jhonatan Narvaez (UAE Team Emirates) claimed third place as Spain's Javier Romo (Movistar Team) held on to the ochre leader's jersey.
Bryan Coquard’s Experience Secures Victory
The 32-year-old Coquard, who previously won the fourth stage of the 2023 Tour Down Under, showcased his vast race experience to sprint from sixth place on the final bend and claim the 157.2km stage in Victor Harbour. "I knew it was my best chance to win here, and yes, it is a perfect day," Coquard said. "I used my experience to do a good sprint from 300 metres out. It was perfect."
Javier Romo Faces Willunga Hill Challenge
Romo finished safely in the peloton to retain his overall lead, though his advantage was cut to four seconds over Narvaez. The Spaniard looks ahead to Saturday's crucial fifth stage, a 145.7km test featuring two climbs up Willunga Hill. "I am very happy. The goal today was to maintain the leader's jersey, and my team did a super job," Romo said.
Narvaez gained more bonus seconds but expressed frustration after being squeezed for space in the chaotic sprint finish. Meanwhile, his teammate and 2023 Tour winner Jay Vine suffered an early crash, finishing with a bloodied calf and shredded shorts but remains eighth overall, 15 seconds behind Romo.
Australia's Fergus Browning (ARA Australian Team) secured the King of the Mountain title, his 41-point lead now mathematically unassailable heading into the decisive Willunga Hill stage.
