In 2025, the Vuelta A España will reach a huge milestone, and the race will celebrate the occasion by doing something that’s never been done – it will begin in Italy.
The decision is a tip of the cap to the huge role Italy has played in the race’s nine decades of history, including Italian riders winning 187 stages and six overall titles.
The Vuelta a España 2025 will be the race’s 90 edition, and competition will get underway Aug. 23. The 21-stage race will run through Sept. 14.

It was announced in early December 2024 that the first three stages of the Vuelta a España 2025 would take place in the Piedmont region of Italy, before returning to Spain for the remaining 18 days of racing.
The 2025 race will begin at the Palace of Venaria near the city of Turin with the Alps as a backdrop.
It will mark the sixth time overall La Vuelta has kicked off outside of Spain, with Portugal (1997, 2024), the Netherlands (2009, 2022) and France (2017) also earning the honor since the inaugural race in 1935. In 2026, the race will begin in Monaco.
The remainder of the 2025 route was revealed Dec. 19, and for the anniversary edition of the race, organizers wanted to bring back some of the climbs that have helped create some of the event’s biggest challenges and memories. Among them, is L’Angliru, known as a symbol of the modern race. It will be featured in Stage 13.
In all, the 21 stages in La Vuelta 2025 will span four countries (Italy, France, Andorra and Spain).

The schedule includes 21 stages and two rest days (Sept. 1 and Sept. 8).
Every day, the cyclists start together. Every stage varies in distance and physical demand, and the characteristics of each stage determine what type of rider should excel or how the race should finish.

Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic won the Vuelta a España in 2024 for a record-equaling fourth career victory at the storied race.
The former ski jumper has been plagued by crashes and injuries, including two significant ones in 2024, but he continues to persevere and managed to land himself among the year’s most memorable moments with wins at the 2024 Critérium du Dauphiné and La Vuelta.
Roglic, who won the Vuelta a España in 2019, 2020 and 2021, joined Spain’s Roberto Heras as the event’s only four-time champions (2000, 2003, 2004, 2005) and made it a clean sweep for Slovenia in the Grand Tours in 2024, with Pogacar winning the Giro and TDF.
