Jonas Vingegaard Contemplates Giro d'Italia Debut In 2025
Jonas Vingegaard considers a Giro d’Italia debut in 2025 but prioritizes reclaiming the Tour de France yellow jersey, aiming to match Pogacar’s tally.
Could Jonas Vingegaard follow in Tadej Pogacar’s footsteps and tackle the Giro d’Italia in 2025? The two-time Tour de France champion hasn’t ruled it out, but his ultimate focus remains on winning another yellow jersey.
Giro A Possibility For Vingegaard
Speaking to TV 2 Sport, as reported by U.S. outlet Velonews, Vingegaard admitted he is considering making his Giro debut, but only if it aligns with his goal of Tour de France glory.
“I’ve read in some places that I’m going to race the Giro, so it could be that I’ll ride the Giro,” Vingegaard said. “We haven’t decided anything yet, and we won’t do that until later. Because I still think the Tour is the biggest thing in cycling.”
Tour Remains The Priority
For the Danish star, the Tour de France remains cycling’s ultimate prize. While the prospect of competing for the maglia rosa excites him, it would primarily serve as a preparation step toward reclaiming the Tour title in July.
“It’s clear if you think it’s better preparation and you can see that there’s a possibility to win it, I think it would be cool to ride,” he said. “But I don’t think I’ll ever compromise on winning the Tour.”
Vingegaard Reflects On 2024
The 2024 season proved challenging for Vingegaard after a catastrophic crash at the Basque Country race left him with multiple injuries, including a broken collarbone, ribs, and a collapsed lung. Despite a rushed recovery, he finished second to Pogacar at the Tour de France—a result that fell short of his ambitions.
“Compared to this year, there are many things you want to do differently,” Vingegaard said. “First and foremost, it’s about not crashing and then just having a preparation that lasts more than a month and a half, because that’s not enough preparation.”
Evaluating The Giro-Tour Double
The possibility of racing the Giro in 2025 remains undecided, with Vingegaard’s team, Visma-Lease a Bike, set to evaluate the option during their December training camps. While a Giro-Tour double presents risks such as unpredictable weather and physical toll, Pogacar’s 2024 win in both events has shown the feat is possible.
“It’s clear that you can see that you can do the Tour and the Giro in the same season,” Vingegaard said. “We’ve seen that with Pogacar, so we’ll see if that’s what we decide.”
Looking Ahead
For now, Vingegaard is focused on offseason training and enjoying time with his growing family following the arrival of his second child. Looking ahead, the Dane is determined to bounce back in 2025 and match Pogacar’s tally of Tour victories.
“The main goal will be to race the Tour, and then it might be that the Giro is better preparation, and that’s why you choose to do it,” he said. “But there are also a lot of unknowns about a bike race rather than being at training camp.”
Whether he will test himself on the Giro’s iconic climbs or stick to his proven Tour-centric strategy remains to be seen.
While the Giro d’Italia hangs as a possibility, one thing is certain: Jonas Vingegaard’s focus is firmly set on reclaiming cycling’s most coveted prize — The Tour de France Overall Title.
