Mark Cavendish Sends Mixed Messages On 2025 Season
Mark Cavendish hints at future plans while Biniam Girmay takes victory at the Saitama Criterium in Japan, finishing ahead of Primoz Roglic.
Mark Cavendish refused to discuss his future amid hints that he could reverse his decision to retire, after finishing third behind Biniam Girmay at Saturday's Tour de France Saitama Criterium in Japan. He sent mixed messages, adding more speculation about 2025.
The 39-year-old Cavendish, the record stage winner on the Tour with 35 victories, is set to compete in the final race of his storied career next week in Singapore. However, he said last week that he "will see" about racing in next year's Tour de France, suggesting he might consider continuing his career despite previously announcing his retirement.
When asked if the Singapore race would definitely be his last, the British rider responded: "I'm here in Saitama. I'm not here to talk about my future; I'm here to talk about the Saitama Criterium."
Girmay Beats Cavendish In Impressive Finish
Cavendish finished third in driving rain in Japan after a thrilling finish that saw Eritrea's Girmay edge out Slovenia's Primoz Roglic at the line. Roglic, who recently claimed his fourth Vuelta a España title in September, made a breakaway with around 3km to go, but Girmay reeled him in to secure victory, leaving Cavendish in third and Belgium's Jasper Philipsen in fourth.
"That's one of the nicest finishes for me," said Girmay. "I just went all-out for the finish line."
Support From Fans Despite The Rain
Despite constant rain in Saitama, north of Tokyo, fans lined the street circuit to watch the race. Girmay, who signed a contract extension with his Intermarché-Wanty team following his success in the Tour de France, was cheered on by a small group of Eritrean fans.
"If you win it's always special," said the 24-year-old. "It doesn't matter if you win yesterday; if you win today, that's always the best feeling."
Crashes And Withdrawals In Saitama Criterium 2024
Spain's Roger Adria did not finish the race after a crash with two other riders midway through. Australia's Ben O'Connor withdrew beforehand due to an injury sustained in the time trial.
