Tour de France 2024 Stage 14 Preview: Into The Mountains

Tour de France 2024 Stage 14 Preview

The sprinters have had their time to shine at the Tour de France 2024, and it's now time for the race to head into the mountains.

Stage 14 of this year's TDF will take the remaining riders into the Pyrenees mountains, where they'll encounter three challenging climbs, but not until the second half of the 151.9-kilometer journey from Pau to Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d' Adet.

Belgian sprinter Jasper Philipsen raced his way to a win in Stage 13 on Friday ahead of fellow Belgian Wout van Aert and Pascal Ackermann. The win was the second of the TDF 2024 for Philipsen, but also likely the final legitimate opportunity for the sprinters this year.

Instead, the time has come for the race leaders to show their diversity and what they're made of when the Tour de France presents its greatest challenges.

Tadej Pogacar Leads Tour de France GC

Two-time champion Tadej Pogacar leads Remco Evenepoel by 1 minute, 6 seconds, and Jonas Vingegaard, the winner the past two years, is third at 1 minute, 14 seconds. Then, there's some serious separation.

Portuguese Joao Almeida is fourth at 4 minutes, 10 seconds, and Spain's Carlos Rodriguez is fifth, 10 seconds further behind.

FloBikes coverage of Stage 14 will begin Saturday at 6:55 a.m. Eastern and is expected to conclude around noon EDT.

Stage 14 Tour de France 2024

Stage 14 of the Tour de France 2024 may be one of the shorter non-time trial stages on the schedule, but it also is expected to be one of the most challenging.

This year's 151.9-kilometer journey from familiar Pau to Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d' Adet takes the riders into the Pyrenees mountains and will conclude with a summit finish.

Along the way, the riders will have about half the race to collect their thoughts during a relatively flat and simple start, before some of the sport's most familiar and feared climbs challenge the world's best cyclists.

The second half of the day will include three climbs - a Category 2 climb sandwiched between two HC (Hors Category) climbs. In cycling, the easiest climbs are Category 4, and HC comes after Category 1. HC climbs are so tough they're beyond classification - they're longer, and they're steep.

In Stage 14, riders will encounter gradients of 7-8% across dozens of kilometers, where 45-plus minutes might feel like forever.

The final climb of the day will bring the riders to Pla d' Adet, a ski resort in the French Pyrenees that first appeared on the TDF map in 1974. Half a century later, the finish line will be in the same place it was when Raymond Poulidor won Stage 16 of the 1974 race.

Poulidor's grandson is Mathieu van der Poel. Though Van der Poel is well-rounded and has many strengths, his climbing skills likely won't see him match his grandfather's Pla d' Adet fame.

Pla d' Adet, which includes sections with a gradient above 10%, has been the finishing spot for the TDF nine more times, most recently in 2014, when Rafal Majka won Stage 17.

As we learned before Stage 13, Pau has been a familiar place for the Tour de France, welcoming 75 editions of the race and experience 60+ launches AND finishes, including the end of Stage 13 this year.

Missing the first part of Stage 14 this year probably isn't a big deal, but true cycling fans won't want to miss the conclusion.

Bonus seconds again will be offered to the first three riders across the line - 10, 6 and 4 seconds, respectively.

Who Won Stage 14 Of The Tour de France in 2023?

Spain's Carlos Rodriguez, a rider for Ineos Grenadiers, won Stage 14 of the 2023 Tour de France. It was the first, and still the only, TDF stage win of his career.

A multi-rider crash at the beginning of the race delayed the Stage 14 action last year, but the end was worth the wait. Rodriguez, 22 at the time, survived the 151.8-kilometer rider and challenging final climb to edge Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, who now have combined to win the last four editions of the TDF.

Rodriguez finished fifth overall last year, while Vingegaard went on to top Pogacar for the title for the second straight year.

Through 13 stages this year, Rodriguez again is in fifth place, this time 4 minutes, 40 seconds behind Pogacar heading into Stage 14.
