The last four Tour de France races have been won by two people: Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar.

And it goes deeper than that. 

Pogacar has finished in either first or second place in the General Classification over that period, and the two riders always seem to be at the top of every cycling expert's list of the best riders in the world.

In 2024, Vingegaard will attempt to become a rare Tour de France winner in three straight years, while Pogacar will attempt to become the first TDF and Giro D’Italia winner in the same year since 1998. 

It all sets the stage for another chapter in one of the top current rivalries in sports. 

Here’s what to know ahead of the 2024 Tour de France, which begins June 29 in Florence, Italy. 

Jonas Vingegaard Vs. Tadej Pogacar At The Tour de France 2024

FloBikes reporter Gregor Brown confirmed that the two have the sports’ top rivalry, but it has less to do with them individually and more to do with Pogacar, of UAE team Emirates, challenging and pushing Jumbo Visma, the most dominant team in the sport, for which Vingegaard rides. 

However, Visma isn't entering the 2024 TDF in peak shape and recently lost Sepp Kuss for the Tour due to COVID.

“That is the biggest rivalry over the past 3-4 years between those two,” Brown said. “Over the last few years, it’s been the dominance of Jumbo Visma, the yellow team, and this year, the team has really taken a beating. Crashes have knocked out Jonas, knocked out Wout Van Aert.”

Brown broke down the competition between Vingegaard and Pogacar as one of the storylines of the Tour. 

“So, this kind of rivalry between the two: Can Tadej Pogacar come back and win the Tour de France?” Brown said. “And this year, he has a really good shot because Jonas Vingegaard is really weakened. The team looks kind of weakened, but the team is kind of like the New York Yankees of cycling. It’s the team.”

The Tour de France has a unique course this year, with start and finish locations that have never been used. The course also has stages with gravel and a time-trial finish. 

But Brown said even if the TDF had a more normal course, the race still would be rare because the four best General Classification, or GC, riders in the world are competing this year. 

Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel all are on the TDF start list. 

Pogacar and Vingegaard have won the last four Tour de France races combined, and theirs might be the sport's biggest rivalry.

"It’s unique because we have four big GC riders," Brown said. "These are the four top GC stars, period, in cycling, and they are all racing the Tour de France. And so, that’s more than we have in past years. We’ve had the two top GC guys, and the other guys are not at the same level. They’re like B-level riders."

Roglič was a member of Jumbo Visma, which Brown likened to the New York Yankees of cycling, but left the team this year so he could ride in the Tour de France for Bora-Hansgrohe. Last year, Roglič won the Giro d'Italia but skipped the Tour de France to race in the Vuelta a España, or the Tour of Spain. 

"It’s really unique that we have these four big stars on the start line," Brown said. "So, the only kind of question mark is around Jonas Vingegaard and what his fitness will be because he hasn’t raced since April 4 when he crashed in the Tour of the Basque Country."

How To Watch Tour de France 2024 In The United States 

A live broadcast of the 2024 Tour de France will be available on Peacock for those watching from the United States. 

Peacock is the exclusive home of the event in the United States through 2029, with start-to-finish coverage of every stage, though select stages also will air on NBC.
