Tour de France Favs: Vingegaard To Pogacar

The 2024 Tour de France will feature the best cyclists in the world competing during the month of July in the sport’s most prestigious event, which starts June 29, but it’s not every year the field of riders includes the four best cyclists in the sport.

That’s the case in 2024, as Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel all are on the start list this year.

Roglič was a member of Team Visma and skipped the Tour in 2023 to ride in the Tour of Spain. That’s more common than some casual cycling fans may think, according to FloBikes reporter Gregor Brown.

"It’s unique because we have four big GC riders," Brown said. "These are the four top GC stars, period, in cycling, and they are all racing the Tour de France. And so, that’s more than we have in past years. We’ve had the two top GC guys, and the other guys are not at the same level. They’re like B-level riders."

The TDF begins at 5:50 a.m. Eastern on June 29 and ends on July 21. The route starts in Florence, Italy, and ends in Nice, France – both are happening for the first time in the race’s long history. And, of course, there are favorites to win the race, and the four riders mentioned certainly are among them.

Here’s who is favored to win the Tour de France 2024:

Tour de France Predictions: Here Are The TDF Favorites

Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič are the overwhelming favorites to win the General Classification, according to Brown.

On Jonas Vingegaard

Back-to-back champion Vingegaard might be the favorite among that group, as he has won the last two and finished just behind Pogacar in 2021. But Vingegaard hasn’t competed since April after a crash.

“It’s a lot to be asked for Jonas Vingegaard to be back in shape,” Brown said. “He had that nasty crash at the Tour of the Basque Country in the month of April, and out of the top GC riders who crashed that day, he came off the worst. Punctured lung, fractured ribs, collarbone, sternum. You name it, he had it. He’s fighting back to be his best.”

Vingegaard also lost his teammate, Sepp Kuss, days before the TDF due to COVID-19.

On Tadej Pogacar

Pogacar, meanwhile, dominated the Giro d’Italia and is trying to complete the double - something that hasn't been done since 1998. The superstar led almost the entire race, taking the pink jersey on Day 2 and never losing it. He also had six stage wins and won the Giro d’Italia by about 10 minutes.

And, oh yeah, he won the Tour de France in 2020 and 2021.

“The last two (Tour de France races) he’s been runner-up,” Brown said. “This year, he’s come out of the gates with a bang. You can tell he’s got his mojo back, and he wants to win the Tour de France.”

Tadej Pogacar's Ambitious 2024 Plans

On Remco Evenepoel

Evenepoel is making his TDF debut.

“There was speculation last year after he dropped out of the Giro d’Italia with COVID that maybe he would take on the Tour de France for the first time, but the team didn’t want to rush it,” Brown said. “They had this project 2024 in mind, (so) instead, he went to (the Tour of Spain), and we all know how that went.”

The Belgian rider had a lead in the Tour of Spain, or Vuelta a España, last year, but Kuss was able to overtake him. Evenepoel did win the same race in 2022.

Brown said the 24-year-old Evenepoel will have plenty of support on his team, Soudal-Quick-Step.

“Those riders will support him in his aim to be the next Belgian superstar,” Brown said. “There’s a lot of hype around Remco, and he’s already shown he can live up to it.”

On Primož Roglič

Roglič was a member of Visma, which Brown likened to the New York Yankees of cycling, but left the team this year so he could ride in the Tour de France for Bora-Hansgrohe, which is rebranding to team Red Bull.

Last year, Roglič won the Giro d'Italia but skipped the Tour de France to race in the Vuelta a España.

“He’s won almost every one-week stage race there is,” Brown said.

Tour de France Odds
