Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard once again showed irresistible form on stage six of the Tirreno-Adriatico on Saturday as he soloed to a second stage win to virtually guarantee the overall victory.

Two-time Tour de France winner Vingegaard of Visma attacked with 6km left of a 10.2km climb at 7.9 percent and finished 26sec ahead of second-placed Juan Ayuso to extend his overall lead to 1min 20sec.

On Friday, Vingegaard finished the 144km stage one minute and 12 seconds ahead of Ayuso and Jai Hindley to take the lead which he then extended with ease on Saturday.

Vingegaard said, "The team pulled all day so I felt I had to try and win the stage also today. Two stage wins make it a great week for us. 

"Bora-Hansgrohe rode at a very high pace on the hill and we thought it was very good for us. Jai Hindley went full gas and then I decided to attack myself. 

"I time trialed to the finish. I am in a better shape than I was one year ago and the year before in March. I'm happy with how it went. One stage to go before I can celebrate."

The stage-six podium of Vingegaard, Ayuso and Hindley was identical to that of Friday's, a first in Tirreno-Adriatico history for consecutive stages.

Stage six was easy on the eye with picture-postcard vineyards, a medieval mountain village and dramatic pointed peaks but, with its 10km final climb, was punishing on the legs.

Sunday's last stage starts and ends in San Benedetto del Tronto on the Adriatic coast with a sprint finish likely at the end of the 154km finale.
