Mark Cavendish DENIED RECORD Tour de France

Cyclist rolled into Bordeaux, France on July 7 as they completed Stage 7 of the Tour de France, and Jasper Philipsen continued to prove his dominance as a sprinter this year. 

It was expected to be a big showdown of sprinters for stage 7 as the cyclists rolled zipped through the beautiful wine country.

The climbers took the spotlight for most of the first full week of the Tour as  Stage 6 featured one of the most difficult summits so far, the Col du Tourmalet. 

The open road route of stage 7 was the perfect opportunity for the sprinters to shine, like in Stage 3 and 4. Only one summit was featured on the route which meant the climbers could conserve their energy for future stages and sprinters could collect more general classification points.

Mark Cavendish had high expectations coming into the stage. Cavendish is an extremely talented sprinter who was hoping to make history. This would have been the 35th Tour de France stage win.

But in the final moments of the race, Cavendish and Philipsen, who won stage 3 and 4, began an incredible surge to the finish line. An extremely close finish, Philipsen wound up in first place, proving his reputation as a top sprinter. Cavendish just barely finished in 2nd. 

The yellow jersey, however, remains on Jonas Vingegaard, who rode steady on July 7 route. His past wins gave him enough points to pace himself for what is to come. Vingegaard leads the general classification standings and will be wearing the yellow jersey for stage 8.
