Tadej Pogacar Recovering For Tour de France 2023
Is Tadej Pogacar OK for the 2023 Tour de France? With the 2023 Tour starting on July 1, it's a race against time.
Is Tadej Pogacar OK for the 2023 Tour de France? The Slovenian two-time Tour winner fell in Liège-Bastogne-Liège and fractured his wrist one month ago. And with the 2023 Tour starting on July 1, it's a race against time.
The good news is that he is now on the road training again, and he has travelled to southern Spain to join his UAE Emirates teammates at an altitude camp in Sierra Nevada.
He posted photos on Instagram celebrating one of his first rides back on the open road after weeks forced away due to the Liège crash. He's been both on his road bike and on his time trial bike, but you can see his wrist is still strapped as it heals. And you can see, he likes his chocolate pastries.
It's a massive step in the right direction for the 24-year-old who won the Tour in 2020 in a nail biter finish over Primoz Roglic and again in 2021.
Prior, he had been forced to train at home or other activities that would not strain his wrist. Now making a step in the right direction, he left his home in Monaco to travel to Sierra Nevada.
There he will find his Tour de France helpers like Adam Yates, George Bennett, and Vegard Stake Laengen. However, he need more time easing back to riding on the roads before joining his teammates on their rides.
Timing is important. Pogacar is due to race the Tour of Slovenia starting in two weeks on June 14. Then four weeks from now, it's the Tour de France. Will he pack the normal Pogacar punch when he returns after a forced break? Time will tell. This year's Tour starts on July 1 in Bilbao, Spain.
