Evenepoel To Make Tour Debut This 2023?

Will Remco Evenepoel race the 2023 Tour de France? He's is recovering from a Covid infection and must now be considering a Tour de France bid this 2023.

Evenepoel announced overnight that he tested positive for Covid after winning his second stage in the Giro d'Italia and retaking the pink jersey lead. The Belgian travels home today on the Giro’s first rest day. The news sent the Belgian and cycling media into a frenzy.

Remco will now recover and refocus for the remainder of his season, which could include a trip to France for its grand tour. Many, including FloBikes, are speculating that Evenepoel could quickly refocus to lead Soudal-Quick Step in the biggest race of them all starting July 1.

The 23-year-old won his first grand tour, the Vuelta a España, last summer and then went to win the road race world title in Australia. The idea for 2023 was that he would take on the Giro given his time trial strengths and the race's large amount of time trialing, compared to the Tour’s one 22-kilometer time trial.

FloBikes will show the race live and on demand for our Canadian viewers and for our worldwide viewers, we'll have highlights, behind the scenes coverage and all sorts of content.

It would now be a short turn around for Evenepoel with the Tour starting in six weeks on July 1 in Bilbao, Spain. He's shown to be so capable, however. This season, won the UAE Tour, fought against Primoz Roglic to second place in the Volta a Catalunya and dominated Liège-Bastogne-Liège for a second straight year.

Likely, he would now recover from the nine days of Giro racing and Covid, then begin training, and some altitude time, before a race return in the Critérium du Dauphiné on June 4.

Team Soudal Quick-Step would benefit from having a bonafide classification leader in the Tour and given lowered expectations on his shoulders, Evenepoel would make a more low-key debut in the Tour de France.
