Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies), three-time world champion, says that 2023 will be his final season as a professional rider on the road.
Sagan, at a press conference in Argentina, said he would not compete in WorldTour past this season and in 2024 he will target the mountain bike event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. He may race some smaller road races in 2024 with his TotalEnergies team.
Sagan, 33, won seven times the green points jersey at the Tour de France, the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix and the World Championships in 2015, 2016, and 2017.
He and the team announced that he will be transitioning away from road racing. The decision was made "some time ago," following a few sub-par seasons affected by COVID infections. It came today during the race, at the Vuelta a San Juan.
Sagan already competed in the mountain bike Olympic Games in 2016, and is putting off-road and the dream of an Olympic medal back at the center of his ambitions. He stated that he will continue racing, including some road races in 2024, but the 2023 campaign will be his last fully dedicated to a WorldTour-level calendar. Instead, he will focus on mountain biking and the dream of an Olympic medal.
He expressed gratitude towards his team, friends, sponsors who have supported him throughout his career.
